First edition. This is the first of Elizabeth’s poems on Italian independence, a cause which she embraced fervently. Casa Guidi was the Brownings’ residence in Florence where she wrote the first part as an optimistic ‘Meditation in Tuscany’ in 1847-8, and the second as an account of the actual situation in 1851.
