First edition of this late and rather dark novel, the plot hingeing upon an inheritance. The question of the legitimacy of Lord Popenjoy, heir to the Brotherton title and estates, would inevitably have reminded contemporary readers of the trial of the Tichborne claimant.Is He Popenjoy? also contains an incidental attack on feminism and the women’s rights movement. The heroine is taken to a meeting at the ‘Rights of Women Institute; established for the Relief of the Disabilities of Females’, known to all as ‘The Disabilities’. Here the heavily-moustachioed Baroness Banmann (who is obsessed with men, despite her favourite phrase, ‘de manifest infairiority of de tyrant saix’) is seen in fierce competition with the betrousered Miss Doctor Olivia Q. Fleabody. Sadleir, Trollope 49; high on his ‘B’ list of comparative scarcities, and in our experience an elusive title.
