CATHERINE II of Russia (1729-96). -
The grand instructions to the commissioners appointed to frame a new code of laws for the Russian Empire: composed by Her Imperial Majesty Catherine II, Empress of all the Russias... Translated from the original... -
London, printed for J. Jefferys, 1768. 4to. Contemp. half calf. XXIII, (1) pp., pp. (3), 258; mild uniform toning of the paper, but generally a very good uncut copy.
First edition in English: scarce. On coming to power, Catherine entered into a lively correspondence with the French encyclopaedists (Voltaire, Diderot, and M. Grimm). She referred to herself as their pupil and promised to realize their aims. In 1767 she convened a Legislative Commission composed of 652 members of all classes (officials, nobles, burghers and peasants) and of various nationalities to codify new laws. Catherine herself drew up the Instructions to the Commission making liberal use of formulations borrowed from the writings of Montesquieu and Beccaria, affirming her belief in the Enlightenment theory of natural law and promising to turn Russia into a law-abiding state that would respect the natural rights of all men. As many of her more moderate and experienced advisers were frightened of her democratic principles, she refrained from immediately putting them into execution, and after holding more than 200 sittings the Commission dissolved without getting beyond the realm of theory. Über uns
In 1906 Carl Ewald Rappaport founded the firm in Rome after nearly ten years experience in some of the most distinguished German antiquarian bookshops such as Boerner at Leipzig and Rosenthal in Munich.
Today his daughter Elisabeth Rappaport Seacombe and his grandson Bernard Seacombe have taken over. They deal in early continental books printed up to the late 19th century of which they offer a good selection in a great variety of subjects: Italian literature, fine arts, architecture, science and medicine, economy, philosophy, history, geography, Rome guides, illustrated books, etc. Prints and maps are also available, especially Rome views, including many by Piranesi.
The shop is in the centre of Rome, on the first floor of a 17th century building. Via Sistina runs from Piazza Barberini to the top of the renowned Spanish steps. Number 23 is almost opposite a well known theatre.
An appointment is not necessary – except Saturdays – but it may occasionally happen that business hours cannot be respected and it is therefore advisable to telephone before calling. English is spoken.
Catalogues are published and most descriptions are in English or with an English note. If you wish to receive them please state your interests, but please note that maps and prints are not included in the catalogues and that the firm does not deal in modern first editions, second hand or out of print books.
Offers of books and prints as described above, especially of Italian interest, are always welcome and will receive prompt attention.
