HOWELLS, WILLIAM DEAN

The Minister's Charge or The Apprenticeship of Lemuel Barker.

Boston: Ticknor and Co., 1887. First edition, American issue, using the same plates as the English edition of 1886, with a new title page. BAL 9627; Wright III, 2822. 8vo, original decorated tan cloth, gilt lettering. ¶ The Minister’s Charge, like many of Howells' works of fiction, probes the structure of the city’s social classes through the life of a young man who comes to Boston in hopes of becoming a poet. Edges very slightly rubbed; prelims foxed; a fine copy.
