Cabañas Bravo, Miguel.

ARTISTAS CONTRA FRANCO: LA OPOSICIÓN DE LOS ARTISTAS MEXICANOS Y ESPAÑOLES EXILIADOS A LAS BIENALES HISPANOAMERICANAS DE ARTE Monografías de Arte/24.

Méx, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 1996, 187p. b/w plates, ports., facs., wrps. Between 1951 and 1956, the Spanish government organized three great expositions of art in Madrid, Havana and Barcelona to "renew" artistic connections between Spain and Latin America and to show the world a new image of the Franco regimen. The I Bienal Hispanoamericana de Arte was repulsed by a group of exiled artists in Paris (Picasso being one of the major influences), as well as Mexican artists that included Rivera, Siqueiros, Tamayo, Mérida. This anti-Franco movement led to "contrabienales" in Paris, Mexico and Havana. EXCELLENT STUDY about the events and the influence on Mexican art.
