MARSHALL, J. (publisher)

The Gamester... The Story of Poor Tricket the Gamester...

J. Marshall, London and Bath, 1796. Octavo chapbook, 16 pp., with a woodcut on the title; a very good copy stitched as issued. A very rare transportation chapbook in particularly good condition.

Eighteenth-century accounts of transportation to Botany Bay printed in such an ephemeral form are particularly elusive. Chapbooks were printed on cheap paper and sold at less than a penny each by chapmen or pedlars. Often illustrated with a crude woodcut on the title-page, they were frequently moralising and this tale tells of a life of gaming and crime and subsequent transportation to Botany Bay.
Not in Ferguson.
