VON MUELLER, Ferdinand
Select Extra-Tropical Plants, readily eligible for Industrial Culture or Naturalisation...
R.S. Brain, Melbourne, 1888. Octavo; a good copy bound with the original front wrapper in contemporary half morocco, rebacked. Presentation copy inscribed to Dr Chisholm Ross by the author. Ferdinand von Mueller was the first Victorian government botanist, and the first professionally trained resident botanist to arrive in Australia. To increase his knowledge of Australian plants he travelled on several inland expeditions - including the Gregory expedition that traversed the country from Victoria River in north-west Australia to Moreton Bay in Queensland in 1855. He has the distinction of gaining more honours than any other colonial scientist, and after his death a special medal was issued to commemorate him. His field work was exhaustive and it is recorded that his collectors stretched from Kangaroo Island to New Guinea. This particular work on tropical plants shows Von Mueller's special interest in the use of plants for medicinal purposes and for economic development.
