Among the French surgeons of the 19th century, Roux (1780-1854), was second in importance only to Dupuytren. He is particularly remembered for his work in plastic surgery and osteoplasty. In 1812 he competed with Dupuytren for the chair of operative medicine with the present thesis. In it he reviews the different methods of resection of bone and for the first time gives detailed descriptions of his own method for which he became famous.
