Folio, modern half-morocco & marbled boards, spine gilt. London: &E. & F.N. Spon, 1857. First edition of this handsomely illustrated “survey of the iron bridges erected in the wake of the Britannia Tubular Bridge with the increased knowledge of the material and its behaviour produced by that monumental structure. The work is made up of a series of handsome plates, fully described and analysed, illustrating examples of all kinds of structures, including aqueducts, viaducts and road bridges. A lengthy section is devoted to the Crumlin Viaduct (prototype for many bridges erected overseas), newly opened and built with Warren & Kennard’s patent triangular girder. Other examples include some of Joseph Cubitt’s bridges on the Great Northern Railway and on the Bute Docks branch of the Rhymney Railway; an aqueduct by McClean on the Cannock Branch of the South Staffordshire Railway; a splendid tubular girder bridge on the Midland Great Western Railway, Ireland, designed by Hemans and constructed by Fairbairn & Sons; Rendel’s Sursuttee Bridge on the East India Railway; Thomas Page’s Chelsea Suspension Bridge; and a final section on iron girders used for fireproof floors. Altogether a mine of useful information.”–Elton, Cat. One, 53. Humber (1821-81), from 1852 to his death, practiced as a consulting civil engineer. He was engaged in surveying for railway lines and projecting water and drainage works for several towns and sanitary districts, as well as in the construction of works. Fine copy.
