Boemus, Johannes

Omnium gentium mores, leges & ritus.

[Colophon:] Apud Friburgum Brisgoiae, excudebat Joannes Faber, 1536. 8vo. 304 + xxiv pp. Woodcut device on title. 17th-century dark brown goatskin, sides decorated with a double gilt fillet border, enclosing a large armorial device of a crowned eagle surmounting the initials CBMV, spine gilt in five compartments, lettered as title, red edges. Spine somewhat wormed and skilfully repaired at head and foot, inner hinges and paste-downs also affected by minor worming. The ownership initials repeated from the cover in manuscript on the title-page, and the front free endpaper inscribed “ex libris heredum C. Bartolomei Martinenghi V” (?). Ink jottings also in a contemporary hand on the colophon, and various marginal marks and underlinings. Lower third of title-page missing and neatly replaced to size with a woodcut vignette of the period depicting an eagle of similar design to the device on the binding. Extremely skilful repairs to occasional marginal tears. Light waterstaining confined to margins of a few leaves at the beginning and end. Boemus’ work is a compilation in which he describes the manners and customs of diverse peoples of the world. The first edition was published in 1520. It was so successful that it was re-edited countless times. Each publisher added something to his edition, reorganizing it, and bringing it up to date. The first edition contains only three parts: Africa, Asia and Europe. A fourth part devoted entirely to America was added later.
