Recherches sur la conductibilité galvanique des électrolytes. 1–2.

Stockholm 1884. 8vo. 64; + 90 pp. + 1 plate. 2 booklets, sewn as issued, original wrappers. First edition of Arrhenius’ famous dissertation, in which he first presented his theory of electrolytic dissociation (but cf. note to [Arrhenius 1887–88]). It represented a new way of thinking about chemical reactions in terms of electricity, thus helping lay the foundations of modern physical chemistry. In 1903 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Issued as appendices to the transactions of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The work was also issued as a dissertation with prefixed additional title-leaf.
