[Bradt, Johannes Gotfred]

Monumenta Fredensburgica iussu Friderici. V. erecta.

[Kjøbenhavn 1769]. Folio. 6 pp. (dedication and table of contents in Danish) + etched title-leaf + 37 plates with 40 etchings (two double-page). Two etched vignettes in the text. Contemporary half calf, worn, top and bottom of spine defective. The Danish architect and engraver Johannes Gotfred Bradt (1741–1770) took four years to etch this magnificient record of the garden sculpture at Fredensborg, near Copenhagen. The sculpture was the work of Johannes Wiedewelt, the greatest Danish sculptor of the eighteenth century. Bradt’s etchings are executed in a distinctive technique with the figures dramatically lit and usually placed against a densely hatched background, endowing them with exceptional plastic force. There is another issue with the dedication (dated 22 July 1769) and table of contents in Latin. Berlin Cat. 3628.
