Gotha 1791. 4to. 10 pp. + 96 (of 100) etched plates. Vignette on title. Printed on thick paper. Bound in contemporary mottled calf gilt to a panel design, smooth spine elaborately gilt in crimson morocco, yellow endpapers, gilt edges, book label removed from front free endpaper. The plate leaves with later numbering in upper right corner. The silhouettes in black printed within a variety of naturalistic, allegorical and purely ornamental cartouches, some printed in bistre and shades of brown.
The four missing plates are Henri IV, Louis XVI, Frédéric, Pr. Royal, and Frédérique, Prsse. One extra plate is bound at end. The German silhouettist Johann Friedrich Anthing was a romantic and yet highly typical figure of the time. Having entered Russian service during the reign of Catherine the Great, he reached the rank of colonel, becoming the adjutant to the famous Suvorov.
