Billberg, Gustaf Johan

Stockholm 1815–6. 6to. 30 pp. + 12 hand-coloured plates, engraved by Johan Gustaf Ruckman afterdrawings by Johan Wilhelm Palmstruch. Sewn as issued, entirely uncut, printed wrappers. As a young man Billberg had joined the circle of amateurs and scholars, one of which was Carl Peter Thunberg, who kept alive the Linnaean tradition in Sweden. He initiated the publication of Svensk Zoologi, a colour-plate work, the publication of which was begun in 1806 by Conrad Quensel and Johan Wilhelm Palmstruch. After the latter’s death in 1811, publication was continued by Billberg, who was also for some time responsible for producing a parallel botanical work, Svensk botanik, 1802–43. The present work on cultivated plants was planned to be finished in 5 or 6 volumes, each volume comprising 12 parts. Scarce. Krok, p. 83.
