New York, published by R. Martin, [1847]. 4to, pp [4], viii, 93, [3], with additional engraved title incorporating a fine engraved view of the entrance to the cemetery, engraved frontispiece, 18 engraved plates (including one in duplicate) of views, and 2 final engraved plates illustrating gates; a very good copy bound in the original blue publisher's cloth, elaborately blocked in gilt and blind on covers and spine. First edition of a description of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, founded in 1838, and one of the largest landscaped cemeteries in the 19th century. It became one of the most fashionable of American cemeteries. It was partly modelled on the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris by its founder Henry Pierrepoint, and the architect Richard Upjohn designed most of the original buildings. Over the years the best in funerary architecture could be found in Green-Wood, and by 1850 it was already a tourist attraction.
