CIOCCHI, Giovanni Maria.

La Pittura in Parnaso ...

Florence, nella Stamperia di Michele Nestenus, 1725. 4to, pp. xxiv, 310; a fine, crisp copy bound in contemporary vellum, contemporary ink lettered spine, red speckled edges. First rare edition. Ciocchi had trained as a painter under Pier Dandini but towards the end of his life, with failing eyesight, he turned to writing. His Pittura in Parnaso follows the seventeenth century tradition of the paragone between painters and sculptors at the court of Apollo on Parnassus. Several chapters are devoted to the paintings to be seen in Santa Maria Novella. Ciocchi’s work was published shortly after his death and according to the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani remains ‘uno dei più interessanti e meno noti documenti delle letteratura artistica fiorentina dell'epoca’. He engages in a friendly polemic with Raffaello Borghini whose early treatise on Florentine paintings Il Riposo (Florence 1584) he critically dissects.Cicognara 102; Schlosser-Magnino p. 664.
