Sugli Obelischi Torlonia nella Villa Nomentana. Ragionamento storico-critico.

Rome, nella tipografia Salviucci, 1842. 4to, pp. [6], 81, [3], with double-page and folding frontispiece, dedication plate, and 16 plates (3 folding), all engraved by Gaetano Cottafavi, all plates with original tissue guards; a few leaves with very light stain at foot but a very good, crisp and clean copy bound in contemporary half red morocco and yellow marbled boards, spine richly gilt, centre of covers with small gilt red morocco onlay with the Torlonia arms. First edition of a detailed account of the erection of two imposing red granite obelisks commissioned by the duke of Torlonia to be carved for him in northern Italy near Beveno, transported by ship to Rome and erected with a public festival in the magnificent park surrounding the Villa Torlonia outside Rome. Francesco Gasparoni (1802-65) was an architect and critic who chronicled the artistic life of 19th century Rome. Gasparoni was supported by the Torlonia family and advised them on architectural matters.Schudt 1133; Rosetti, Rome, 5272; Borroni 8384.
