HOGARTH, William.

Zergliederung der Schönheit, die schwankenden Begriffe von dem Geschmack festzusetzen. Aus dem Englischen übersetzt von C. Mylius. Verbesserter und vermehrter Abdruck.

Berlin und Potsdam, bey Christian Friederich Voss, 1754. 4to, pp. [28], viii, 111, [1]; with 2 large folding engraved plates on thick paper; title-page a little spotted, a little light browning here and there but a very good copy in contemporary half sheep and sprinkled boards, gilt spine. Second edition of the first German translation of The Analysis of Beauty, issued in the same year as the London-Hanover edition but now edited by Gotthold Lessing, corrected and with additional material. The translator, Christlob Mylius, was a young poet and critic who arrived in London in 1753 and died there the following year. Gotthold Lessing, distantly related to Mylius by marriage, reviewed this translation in the German Press and edited this new edition. The Voss edition includes a translation of Rouquet's Lettres de Monsieur ** ... pour lui expliquer les estampes de Monsieur Hogarth and a new foreword by Lessing himself.Vinet 74; Stanley E. Read, Some Observations on William Hogarth's Analysis of Beauty: a Bibliographical Study in Huntington Library Quarterly, April 1942.
