[LA BOÉTIE, ETIENNE DE]. PLUTARCH.

Plutarchi Chaeronei Eroticus. Interprete Arnoldo Ferrono Burdigalensi [i.e. Arnauld de Ferron].

Lyons, Jean de Tournes, 1557. 8vo., pp. 102, title with a “Rabelaisian” woodcut border of grotesques; recently bound in polished calf. First edition of Arnauld de Ferron’s translation of Plutarch’s dialogue on Love. The translation is supplemented by a series of annotations (pp. 80-92) furnished by Etienne de la Boétie, his first and only lifetime appearance in print. Modestly called Recognita quaedam, Ferron prints them with a note at end, “Haec adnotare libuit, pleraque autem sunt ex iis quae a Stephano Boetho, collega meo, viro vere Attico et altero aetatis nostrae Budaeo, excepi”.The single most important influence on Montaigne (“Par ce que c’estoit luy, par ce que c’estoit moy”), La Boétie was an able scholar. He seems to have known Ronsard personally and Scaliger praised his verse. Copies located: Paris, BN; Bordeaux; Bibl. de Berne (according to Cartier); and Yale.
