TROLLOPE, Anthony.
The American Senator ... in three Volumes ...
London: Chapman & Hall … 1877. 3 vols., 8vo., with the half-titles; original pinkish-ochre silk-grained cloth, blocked in black and lettered in gold; faint traces of labels, very slightly shaken, but a fine, bright copy. First edition. Serialized in Temple Bar between May 1876 and July 1877, The American Senator is a fine example of late Trollope comedy. Senator Elias Gotobed, of the fictional state of Mickewa, arrives in England on a fact-finding tour, and goads English provincial and metropolitan society into reaction by questioning their ‘irrational and salutary’ customs and manners. According to Sadleir, the novel contains some of the best hunting scenes ‘not only in Trollope, but in the whole of English fiction’. Sadleir, Trollope 46.
