Varaksin, 1910. 4to, pp. [iv], 14, [2], 15-52, [4], with 29 full-page plates, many mounted on card, and numerous illustrations and vignettes in the text; ink ownership inscription to the title and small hole in the gutter; original printed wrappers designed by Mitrokhin, somewhat dust-soiled, spine rubbed, a couple of tears, old Russian price stamps to rear cover. First edition of the first and only number of a rare Russian art journal. It is divided into two main sections, one literary, the other artistic, but begins with a short collection of poems, by Blok, Viacheslav Ivanov, Kuzmin, Voloshin, Makovsky, Cherubina, Gorodetsky, Borodaevsky, Tarasov, Rukavishnikov, and Briullova. The artistic part has illustrations and architectural designs by Anisfeld, Alexandre Benois, Bilibin, Gaush, Kardovsky, Lukomsky, Nikolai and Yevgeny Lansere, Mitrokhin, Novodvorskaya, Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Petrov-Vodkin (Mantel contributes a short piece on the 'Russian Gauguin'), Somov, and Tamanov. The literary part includes contributions from Petrov-Vodkin ('A trip to Africa'), Chulkov, Kurbatov (on Russian decorative art), Mantel (the popularity of art), Camille Mauclair (contemporary memorials), Lukomsky (the artist and the theatre), with illustrations by Vrubel and Valloton. It includes a notice of the recent requiem service held for Vrubel in Kazan Cathedral.OCLC and RLIN locate copies at Amherst College and Harvard only.
