Large 8vo, pp. 182; a fine copy, uncut in the original sheets as issued; original wrappers printed in red and black, with supplementary wrappers on japon issued for distribution among 'Les XX' (see below); original publisher's folder and slip-case; with the bookplate of Léon Comar on China paper. First edition: copy no. 1, signed by the author. The first of 21 copies of a 'tirage spécial sur papier vélin à la cuve des Manufactures d'Arches réservé pour "Les XX"', printed on specially made paper with a 'Les XX' watermark. Isabelle was the second book of the Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, preceded by Claudel's L'Otage earlier the same year. Gide had the first printing of Isabelle, on 29 May 1911, destroyed on account of its many typographical errors. It was reprinted on 20 June in 3 different issues, each with its own setting-up, pagination, and wrappers. The present issue is the first.
