8vo, pp. 48 [5] 52--178, pp. 15/16 and 135/135 are cancels. Plates: 8 engraved plates: nos 2--4 signed 'Adam sct.', pl. 6 signed 'Giraldon et Lale sct.' (bound as throwouts at the end). Leaf size and condition: 235 x 155mm untrimmed. Light dustsoiling. Binding: Original plain pastepaper wrappers. Provenance and annotation: References: Wheeler Gift 749.
First edition; a copy in the Smithsonian is dated 1817 but is apparently otherwise identical.
§ A well illustrated description of the construction and use of Maissiat's improved surveying compass and other surveying and drawing instruments, with a short history of the mariner's compass. A note at the end of the text advertises that the two grammomètres described are manufactured by Lenoir, the leading French scientific instrument maker of the time.
