book detail

Goudy Gaudeamus. In celebration of the dinner given Frederic W. Goudy on his 74th birthday.

N.p. Distaff Side 1939 12mo. (140) pp., some frenchfold. Limited to 195 copies. The Distaff Side was a group of women, mostly the wives of the Typophiles, who were interested in fine printing and publishing and who were printers themselves. Their numbers included Bertha Goudy, Mabel Dwiggins, Jane Grabhorn, etc., and their books were most often printed to raise funds for specific causes. This little volume is a grouping of tributes, comic verses, etc. to Frederic Goudy, printed at well-known presses, including as well an excerpt from D. B. Updike's "The Black Art." In addition, this copy has the often lacking birthday card from the Distaff Side, tipped in to the front of the book. A near fine in buckram-backed marbled boards with the original glasine wrapper.
