WILKES, Charles

Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition...

Ingram, Cooke, and Co., London, 1852. Two volumes, octavo, with a frontispiece portrait in each volume, 12 plates and 48 text vignettes; faintly embrowned throughout, but a good set in the original embossed black cloth, by Leighton Son & Hodge, with their tickets in each volume, spines elaborately decorated in gilt, minor wear to head and tail of spine of volume one. Octavo edition, abridged for general consumption, of the official account of the great United States Exploring Expedition, under the command of Wilkes: this is an early edition of this frequently reprinted account of the voyage - as an illustrated English edition it is preceded only by the full six-volume edition of 1845.

The Wilkes expedition explored the South Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands, the Northwest coast, California, Singapore, the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. However the greatest achievement was the expedition into the Antarctic in the winter of 1839-40: Wilkes was the first to announce the existence of an Antarctic continent.
Haskell, 12; Hill, p. 325; 'Magnificent Voyagers. The U.S. Exploring Expedition', ed. H.J. Viola and C. Margolis, Smithsonian Institution, 1985.
