WOLF, Joseph

The Red Kangaroo. Macropus Rufus.

no imprint but [London], 1861. Handcoloured lithograph, 340 x 245 mm.; fine, framed. Joseph Wolf, aleading English naturalist, prepared a remarkable zoological work that depicted one hundred animals (actually in the Regent's Park Zoo) in their natural surroundings. A number of the animals were Australian; perhaps the most outstanding of all is this big red kangaroo.

The plate is a handcoloured lithograph, and is from the preferred subscribers' issue in which the illustrations were laid down on heavy white sheets with captions printed in gold. This illustration has a wonderfully rich texture; not surprisingly, Joseph Wolf's work is described by Sitwell in Fine Bird Books as belonging in the same rank as that of Audubon and Edward Lear.
