TROEDEL, Charles, Publisher

New South Wales Album.

Sydney, 1878. Oblong quarto, with 22 chromolithographs (two double-page); a little occasional foxing, one plate repaired, one leaf of text lacking; nonetheless a good copy in original brown cloth, front cover lettered in gilt within a decorative border, all edges gilt; the black roan spine and corners neatly renewed. A rare series of chromolithograph views after the artist Robert Wendel, published in Sydney by Charles Troedel. Troedel was trained as a lithographer in Germany by his father and later worked in Norway before immigrating to Melbourne. In 1863 he published his Melbourne Album Series, a highly successful series of twenty-four views. In 1865-55 he issued a series of twelve chromolithographs after Nicholas Chevalier, for which he was awarded a medal at the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition for "successfully introducing chromolithography into Victoria". This series of twenty-two picturesque views of Sydney and New South Wales was Troedel's final pictorial series.

This copy has the separate 27-page History of New South Wales to which Ferguson refers but does not have the advertisements that he mentions.
Wantrup, 265.
