SGANZIN, Joseph Mathieu.

Translated from the French...from the Third French Edition, with Notes and Applications adapted to the United States. Six folding engraved plates. viii, 220 pp. 8vo, orig. cloth-backed boards (minor rubbing), printed paper label on spine (label flaked), uncut. Boston: Hilliard, Gray, Little, & Wilkins, 1827. First American edition of this classic textbook; it was a very popular and successful book in the U.S. with several later editions. It was first published in Paris in 1807 as the Programme; it was to form the basic text for several generations of engineers, not only in France but also in North America, where it was used at the West Point Military Academy until 1837. Sganzin (1750-1837), was one of the leading civil engineers in France for nearly fifty years; he worked on a series of great projects including the port of Havre, the re-establishment of the great lock near Ostende, and the enlargement of the great lock at Flessingue.
