Maria Pavlovna Romanov (1786-1859), younger sister of Alexander I and Nicholas I, who had married Carl Friedrich, Crown Prince of Saxe-Weimar in 1804. She remained in Weimar for the next half century. Goethe's text includes also preliminary announcements of the masked procession, and a list of people taking part, among them Goethe himself (as Mephistopheles), von Münchhausen, Frl. von Schiller, Vulpius, Frl. von Herder, von Arnim, Frau von Goethe, etc.Goedeke IV/3, 491, 107; Hagen, Drucke von Goethes Werken, 405.
