Picturae antiquissimae bellum Iliacum repraesentantes nunc primum ex Homeri codice non sine descriptionibus editae.

Milan, Regiis typis, 1819. Oblong folio (290 x 405 mm.), printed half-title, printed title-page, and 58 plates engraved by Emanuel Schott with printed commentary in Latin underneath; extremities a little dusty but a fine, uncut copy printed on thick paper in contemporary marbled wrappers, top of spine worn. First edition of the printed reproduction of the illustrations of one of the oldest surviving illustrated manuscript. The Codex Ambrosianus Pictus was executed at the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th century. The illustrations are reproduced by fine and expressive out-line engravings by Emanuel Schott.The Royal Press of Milan published the manuscript in two issues; one reproducing Homer's text with extensive scholia and commentary and the illustration, while the other reproduces only the illustrations.Cicognara 1101; RLIN locates only the New York Public copy; NUC adds Chicago; no copy in OCLC.
