First edition. An entertaining social comedy, Ayala’s Angel follows the fortunes of the orphaned sisters Ayala and Lucy Dormer as they seek out suitable husbands. Lucy, the quieter sister, settles happily with an artist, Isadore Hamel. The romantic Ayala, however, finds that none of her suitors matches up to her idealized vision of a husband. Eventually she accepts a proposal from the youngest colonel in the British Army, Jonathan Stubbs; though ugly, his persistence and good sense overcome all Ayala’s objections, and he ends the novel transfigured into her ‘Angel of Light’.
