First edition. 'Ce volume, imprimé dès 1805, n'a été libré au commerce qu'en 1828' (Quérard, IX-299); a note pencilled into this copy states that 854 copies were printed.
§ Svanberg led an expedition, under the auspices of the Stockholm Academy of Sciences, to measure the length of a degree of the meridian near the pole in Lapland. The result was markedly shorter than had been obtained by Maupertuis, though the mid-point of the two degrees was not quite the same.
