New York, London: Harper & Brothers, 1908. First edition. BAL 9790 (Howells), etc. 8vo, original decorated blue cloth, gilt lettering. Frontis and 11 plates. ¶ A collaborative novel which was originally Howells’ idea. He wanted to bring together 10 to 12 American authors, with each writing a chapter on one member of a large, average American family. Hence the chapters are “The Father,” “The Old-Maid Aunt,” “The Grandmother,” “The Son-In-Law,” etc. Howells passed along the duty of making arrangements with the various authors to Elizabeth Jordan, an editor at Harpers, but the egos of the contributors immediately collided and the end result was far from Howells’ original design. The contributors are Howells, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Mary Heaton Vorse, Mary Stewart Cutting, Elizabeth Jordan, John Kendrick Bangs, Henry James, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Edith Watt, Mary R. Shipman Andrews, Alice Brown and Henry Van Dyke. Spine a little faded and slightly spotted; very good copy.
