TROLLOPE, Anthony
The Small House at Allington.
Smith, Elder, London, 1864. Two volumes, octavo, with 18 illustrations by Millais; later half dark blue morocco by Roger de Coverly & Sons. First book edition of this novel which originally appeared in the Cornhill Magazine for September 1862 and ran until April 1864. With two of the points sometimes noted in volume 1 ("hobbledehoya" p. 33; and p. 70 mispaged "0").
The fifth of the Barsetshire Chronicles, and written at the height of Trollope's popularity, it follows two of his most endearing heroines, Lillian and Bell Dale, in a lively tale of thwarted and unrequited love. The novel continues Trollope's association with John Everett Millais, and shows a distinct evolution from the plates in Orley Farm, in particular the more confident use of contrast, as well as much finer detailing in the faces, best seen in the pre-Raphaelite profile of the heroine in the absurdly titled 'Please Ma'am, can we have the peas to shell?'.
With the bookplates of Oliver Brett.
Sadleir, 18; Wolff, 6795.
