WALPOLE, Lieut.The Hon. Fred

Four Years in the Pacific in Her Majesty's Ship "Collingwood" from 1844 to 1848.

Richard Bentley London, 1849. Two volumes, octavo, with frontispieces, many engravings throughout the text; early engraved bookplates in both volumes, a very set bound in contemporary half blue polished calf, extremities rubbed. Very scarce: the first of several editions of this 'lively account of this voyage by an English officer' (Forbes).

Walpole served on the 'first British ship-of-the-line to enter the Pacific Ocean via Cape Horn since Lord Anson in 1741. Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Juan Fernandez Island, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Mexico, California, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Samoa Islands were visited. The Collingwood arrived at Monterey a few days after the American flag had been raised there by John Drake Sloat...' (Hill).

The Hawaiian significance of the book is considerable and is described at length by Forbes in the Hawaiian National Bibliography (1757).Whilst in Honolulu, Walpole was granted an official audience at the palace, and the Hawaiian king came aboard the Collingwood while it was at anchor in Honolulu.
Hill, 1815; O'Reilly-Reitman, 1093.
