WHATELEY, Archbishop Richard

Thoughts on Secondary Punishments...

B. Fellowes, London, 1832. Octavo, contemporary ownership inscriptions on title-page and annotated extensively throughout in pencil; otherwise a good clean copy in the original grey boards, spine repaired printed paper label defective. First edition, scarce: Whately was Archbishop of Dublin, and an eccentric aficionado of boomerang-throwing. 'In the spirit of a philosopher he studied our penal system, which he proposed to reform by the abolition of all punishments but such as were strictly and merely deterrent. His principles were too abstract to gain general acceptance, and were indeed never given to the world in their entirety; but his public utterances in regard to transportation did much to awaken the public mind to a sense of its futility and mischievous results' (DNB).
