This appears to be a privately printed nonce collection of Whitworth’s various scientific papers; there were other editions in 1858 and 1873, each with different contents. The contents of this collection are: 1. “On Plane Metallic Surfaces, and the Proper Mode of Preparing them”; 2. “On a Uniform System of Screw Threads”; 3. “Excerpt Minutes of Proceeding of the Meeting of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, at Glasgow, 17th September, 1856. Address of the President”; 4. “On a Standard Decimal Measure of Length for Mechanical Engineering Work”; 5. “Letter to the Earl De Grey and Ripon”; 6. “On the Proper Form of Projectiles for Penetration through Water”; 7. “Comparison between the Whitworth ‘Polygonal’ and the Woolwich ‘Studded’ Projectiles”; 8. “On the Proof of Guns”; 9. “On the Penetration of Armour Plates by Long Shells fired obliquely”; 10. “Report of the Discussion on Mr. Whitworth’s Paper, ‘On the Penetration of Armour Plates with Long Shells of Large Capacity fired obliquely”; 11. “Sir Joseph Whitworth on Machinery”; 12. “Sir J. Whitworth’s Guns”; 13. “The Whitworth Guns. Present State of the Question”; 14. “Comparative Tests by Gunpowder”; 15. “Whitworth Metal” Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803-87), a fellow of the Royal Society and president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, was a mechanical genius who discovered the true plane and made important contributions to exact measurement, gunnery and artillery, and metallurgy (see the long account of this fascinating man in D.N.B., XXI, pp. 166-70).
