Small 8vo, pp. 304, [2] (blank), with engraved frontispiece, 3 engraved plates, 8 engraved vignettes in the text, and engraved vignette on title-page, all by Adam Friedrich Oeser after Geyser; a crisp and clean copy printed on thick paper and bound in near contemporary boards, c. 1800, joints a little rubbed, gilt lettered red paper label on spine. First edition, first issue, of this anonymously published work, which purports to be a translation of Diogenes. It is charmingly illustrated by Adam Friedrich Oeser, who taught Goethe how to draw and had Winckelmann living in his house in 1745/55, being influential in forming the latter's ideas which appeared in the Gedanken über die Nachahmungen der griechischen Werke in der Malery (1755).Holzmann/Bohatta IV, 2847; Goedeke, IV, 1, 554, 60; Rümann, 1265; RLIN locates only the Yale copy.
