CHACÓN, Pedro.

De triclinio, sive de modo convivandi upud priscos romanos, & de convivorum apparatu. Accedit Fulvi Ursini appendix ...

[Heidelberg], in officina Sanctadreana, 1590. 8vo, pp. [4], 192, [12], with 4 nearly full-page woodcut illustrations in the text, title-page with woodcut printer's device; a very good, clean copy in German 17th century speckled calf, richly gilt spine. From a German aristocratic library with their ownership stamp on front fly-leaf. Second edition, first issue, of this influential treatise on Roman table manners, food and drink. It was originally published in Rome in 1588.The triclinium, the dining room in a Roman villa, was furnished with three couches each accommodating three diners, surrounding a central round or rectangular table. Its walls and ceilings were often painted with frescoes and the floor decorated with richly ornamented mosaics; many triclinia were discovered two hundred years later in excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii. In late Roman times rulers used it as a ceremonial room, with Theodoric's triclinium in the palace of Padua being regarded as a model by Italian antiquaries. The text cites Roman authors and includes Chacón's interpretation of ancient feasts, banqueting customs, and descriptions of various wines, including chilled ones. The appendix contains Fulvio Orsini's learned commentary on Chacón's treatise, elucidating the various points made. The illustrations are copied from ancient Roman reliefs.B.IN.G. 462; Bitting, p. 89; Palau 66773; not in Adams.
