Bologna, per li Manolessi, 1672. 4to, pp. [18], 406, [2], with additional engraved title-page, portrait of the dedicatee, Cardinal Francesco Barberini, engraved by Hubertus van Otteren, fine section title incorporating the Academy's emblem, 31 portraits within elaborate frame, and 70 emblems (70 x 70 mm.; including 2 full-page) in the text, all engraved by Lorenzo Tinti after drawings by Agostino Carraci and Giuseppe Maria Mitelli, and numerous wood-engraved tail-pieces; a very good copy bound in contemporary vellum. First edition of this rare and curious emblem book celebrating the leading learned society of Bologna, the Accademia dei Gelati. The work collects portraits, emblems and detailed biographical data of the most important Academicians and their Academy names, from the inception of the Academy in 1588 to 1672. Each Academician has appended to their entry a list of their published works (including location and publisher), sometimes with important secondary information unlikely to be found anywhere else, and a list of their writings that remained unpublished or in manuscript form.
