MILIZIA, Francesco.
Trattato completo, formale e materiale del Teatro.
Venice, nella stamperia di Pietro & Gio: Batt. Pasquali, 1794. 4to, pp. 104, with 6 folding engraved plates, engraved vignette on title, fine copy in contemporary half calf, gilt spine with orange label, joint at top of spine a little cracked. The third edition and first to appear under the author's name; the first of Rome, 1771, having been suppressed by the papal censors. Milizia's survey of the history of theatre and spectacle concludes with a detailed description of the principal European theatres, including the theatre in St. Petersburg. He also discusses the project for a new, ideal theatre by Vincenzo Ferrarese, making a plea for a theatre 'all antica', with a circular, domed auditorium. He uses the occasion to criticise the Romans for their negligent treatment of their classical heritage, leaving the Theatre of Marcellus to decay.Cicognara 765; Berlin Kat 2793 (the 1773 edition).
