[KEDDIE, Henrietta].

Citoyenne Jacqueline, a Woman's Lot in the great French Revolution. By Sarah Tytler [pseud.] ...

[London:] Alexander Strahan … 1865. 3 vols., small 8vo., with a half-title in each volume and a 26-page catalogue at the end of volume III; a bright copy in the original publisher’s green cloth, bevelled edges, spine gilt; hole in front free endpaper of volume III; bookplates of the Fleming Stevenson Memorial Library presented to the General Assembly’s College, Belfast, stamps of the Presbyterian College, Belfast. First edition of ‘a slightly precious but atmospheric tale of the French Revolution’ (Oxford DNB). At the novel’s opening in 1792, Jacqueline, of aristocratic birth, is living with her parents in the hamlet of Faye, adjusting to her new life as a ‘citizen’. She is engaged to her cousin the Chevalier Achille René, but the local lad Michel Sart, more lowly yet well educated, harbours his own secret affection. When Achille’s devotions switch to the worldly Petronille du Croï, Jacqueline escapes the fate of living with the new couple in England by marrying Michel. Meanwhile sans-cullotism is in ascendency, and Jacqueline is soon forced to flee to Paris, while her parents are arrested; after various adventures in the capital, Jacqueline herself faces trial, but survives to return to Faye with Michel as the status quo is restored.Henrietta Keddie (1827-1914) turned to writing in the 1850s and had a prolific output under the pseudonym ‘Sarah Tytler’. A Scottish former schoolmistress, she often wrote for or about adolescent girls, as here where the heroine is sixteen.Wolff 6899.
