[WARD, Robert Plumer].
De Clifford; or, The Constant Man. By the Author of Tremaine ... in four Volumes ...
London: Henry Colburn .. 1841. 4 vols., 12mo., with the half-titles in volumes I and II (none called for in III and IV), and the advertisement leaf in volume IV; uncut in the original half-cloth and boards with printed labels; small embossed book-labels affixed to title pages; a very good copy. First edition of Ward’s last Silver Fork novel, published some fourteen years after De Vere, or, The Man of Independence. As a late contribution to the genre, it allows itself a certain reflective quality with regard to silver fork society, and there is a passage (reported, tongue firmly in cheek, by Alison Adburgham) in which ‘the hero tries to explain what it is that distinguishes nous autres of the haut ton. Finally he arrives at the unchallengeable definition – it is “that indescribable something”’. Sadleir 3297.
