TROLLOPE, Anthony.

The Way we live now ... with forty Illustrations. In two Volumes ...

London: Chapman and Hall … 1875. 2 vols., 8vo., with half-titles and forty plates by Lionel Fawkes;fore-edges a little foxed; original grass-green patterned cloth, blocked in black on front, spines gilt and black; a few leaves partly sprung in both volumes, joints slightly rubbed, but a nice, bright copy. First edition. This is one of Trollope’s longest novels, ‘rich in sub-plot’, inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s, and lashing the ‘pervading dishonesty’ of the age – commercial, political, moral, and intellectual. Sutherland remarks also that it is one of the last ‘memorable’ novels to have been published in monthly parts. In cloth-bound form it is frequently found rather worn. Sadleir’s mistaken attribution of the illustrations (signed L.G.F) to Luke Fildes was corrected when a copy belonging to one Edith Mary Fawkes came to light, in which, under the legend ‘with forty Illustrations’ on the title-page, she had written ‘by Lionel Fawkes’. Trollope himself had discovered Fawkes, a young man of twenty-four who was an officer in the Royal Artillery. Sadleir, Trollope 44.
