[MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY, Felix.] SEIDEL, Johann Julius.
Breslau, F. E. C. Leuckart, 1843. Printed by Heinrich Richter. 8vo, pp. iv, [2], 210 + 2 large folding plates containing nine illustrations, music examples, and with loose-leaf advertisement for invitation to subscribe loosely inserted at end; some general light foxing throughout and a small brown stain on pp. 13/14, otherwise a very good copy in publisher’s printed boards, corners bumped. First edition: a standard introduction to organ-building by an influential nineteenth-century theorist. It received further editions in 1844, 1875, and 1887, and was reprinted as recently as 1987; an English translation, The Organ and its Construction, was published in 1852 (reprinted 1982). The author was organist at the Christophorikirche in Breslau. From the library of Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) with his ownership signature in ink on the front free endpaper. Mendelssohn made an inventory of his library when the family moved in the 1840s; the listing survives and shows this particular volume (as well as the enlarged 1844 edition) noting it as a presentation copy from the author (see Peter Ward Jones, ‘The Library of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’, pp. 289–328 in Festschrift Rudolf Elvers zum 60. Geburtstag, Tutzing, 1985, in which the inventory is discussed). The composer’s library was curious in that it had little music literature but many literary and practical books.Just prior to this publication Mendelssohn was in discussion with Freidrich August II about the establishment of a conservatory in Leipzig and in January 1843 notices appeared announcing the institution and the courses of study available which naturally included the organ and singing. Mendelssohn, himself a distinguished organist, composed his six organ sonatas in 1844–5.This edition not in the British Library integrated catalogue.
