Moscow, "Ogonek", 1924 [= 1925]. 12mo, pp. 55, [1]; a little browned and worn, but a very good copyin the original illustrated wrappers, mildly creased. First edition of two short stories, 'The last landowners' and 'Misunderstanding'. Savinkov, author, drug-addict, mystic, renegade and terrorist, died in May 1925 while in Bolshevik detention; 'The last landowners' signed 'Inner prison, April 1925', must be one of the final products of his idiosyncratic pen.Following the Revolution, Savinkov waged a terrorist campaign against the Bolsheviks from abroad, becoming 'The #1 Enemy of the Soviet Republic' (Richard Spence, Boris Saviknov: Renegade of the left); returning to Russia in 1924, he was arrested, tried, and made a public conversion to Bolshevism, before dying in suspicious circumstances in 1925. Savinkov was an aquaintance of Stalin, the model for Dudkin in Bely's Peterburg, a drug-addict, womanizer and mystic, and one of only two Russians in Churchill's Great Contemporaries (1937).Kilgour 1042. OCLC lists four copies: Amherst, Harvard, Columbia and Cornell. KVK adds Basel/Bern.
