HORT, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL

Penelope Wedgebone: the Supposed Heiress . . . Embellished with Eight Coloured Etchings on Steel, by Alfred Ashley.

London: J. & D. A. Darling, [1850]. First edition. Sadleir 1223; Wolff 3294. 8vo, contemporary green half morocco, green cloth sides, a.e.g., gilt decorated and lettered spine. Frontis, pictorial title and six colored plates. ¶ A social satire with wonderful illustrations by an author and artist about whom almost nothing is recorded; even the publisher is obscure. Hort wrote a few other similar titles (The Man who Eloped with His Wife, etc), a couple of which were also illustrated by Ashley. The pictorial title was trimmed a little closely during binding, shaving the imprint; the printed title page was not affected; very good copy.
