WEIDLER, Johann Friedrich.

Historia Astronomiae sive de Ortu et Progressu Astronomiae. Liber Singularis.

Title in red & black. 12 p.l., 624, [40] pp. 4to, cont. calf (some browning as usual), gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, lettering piece gone. Wittenberg: G.H. Schwartz, 1741. First edition of the first complete history of astronomy and still of great value for its bibliographical information. Lalande greatly praised this work and wrote that, while Bailly's history is more extensive, Weidler's is precious for the large amount of factual information it contains. Weidler (1691-1755), who succeeded Wolf in the chair of mathematics at Wittenberg, was a fellow of the Royal Society and wrote many books on mathematics, hydraulics, astronomy, and technology. Nice copy. Houzeau & Lancaster 11"Première histoire complète de l'astronomie." Lalande, p. 414.
