Arrhenius, Svante August
“Ueber die Wärmeabsorption durch Kohlensäure und ihren Einfluss auf die Temperatur der Erdoberfläcke.”
Offprint from Öfversikt af Kongl. Vetenskaps-Akademiens Förhandlingar, Stockholm 1901, no.1, pp. 25–58.
Sewn as issued, original wrappers.
First edition. These seminal works on global warming contain Arrhenius’ calculations relating to carbonic acid - carbon dioxide. Arrhenius predicted that the release of carbon dioxide through burning coal, oil and natural gas, would lead to a significant rise in temperatures worldwide. The first to predict man-made global warming, Arrhenius’ calculations and predictions were impressive but are now considered underestimated. Arrhenius was also the first to quantify the greenhouse effect. His original crude estimate of about 5 degrees centigrade warming from a doubling of carbon dioxide is larger but not greatly different from the 1.5 – 4.5 degrees centigrade now estimated. The theory was won no recognition at the time.
“Before Arrhenius attacked the problem, it had received only intermittent attention by physicists, notably John Tyndall and Samuel P. Langley” (Crawford, p. 146). DSB, 1, p. 300. Crawford, pp. 145–55.
