Considérations sur la construction des théatres a propos de la reconstruction du Théatre des Arts, a Rouen.

This is an off-print from the Encyclopédie d'Architecture (April 1877). Louis Sauvageot (1842-1908), chief architect of Rouen and pupil of Viollet-le-Duc, had won the architectural competition to built a new theatre in Rouen, as the old one had burned down. He introduces the public to his winning design, illustrating plans and elevations, but also discussing the other architectural entries. His theatre was eventually built, with sculptures by Chapu and interior decorations by Baudoin and Millet. The teatre had a capacity of 1500 seats and opened in 1882 with Les Huguenots, the policy of giving French premiers attracted Parisian audiences on special trains. The theatre was bombed in 1940 and did not survive World War II.
